Finding a suitable school for your child’s needs can be full of uncertainty and anxiety. Facing growing pressures from increased competition, globalisation, and the explosion of the information age; parents, students, and educators alike have become overwhelmed. The rapid pace, breadth, and depth of academic knowledge that is seemingly a requisite for future success is staggering, often leading to academic overachievement, stress, and depression in students. In today’s climate I see children, as young as eight, distressed and closed to learning. Yet true academic rigour and success can be achieved through developmentally appropriate and measured instruction, coupled with providing a socially healthy and comfortable environment. Essential to a successful education, focus must be placed on the individual student in terms of their academic advancement and personal development. That includes recognition that some students are ‘late bloomers’, whilst others seek to be challenged at an early point in their development.
At Cunae we recognise these differences and rather than punishing students for what they don’t know, we embrace them for what they do know; providing students with an evironment and curriculum that gives each the opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their individual academic acuity. This approach also aides students’ personal development; deepening their levels of conscientiousness, confidence, self-awareness and evaluation, and maturity. Also important to their academic and personal growth, is social development. We encourage students to hone their social skills through promoting qualities such as tolerance, open-mindedness, and sensitivity towards others; achieved through, peer to peer collaboration, analysis and reflection, and development of sound communication skills. A symbiotic relationship exists between a students emotional and academic advancement; neither can fully develop without the other being in balance. Whilst not always easy to achieve, the staff and I rigorously pursue meeting this objective, with the support of parents.
Lastly, in creating a suitable learning environment, curriculum, for the most part, should interest students. As adults we understand that interest is a primary motivator to achieving goals, yet often we expect children to step up to fulfilling their academic role, despite lack of interest or being given suitable tools. Although it is impossible to ensure each student is sufficiently interested in all content at all times, Cunae provides many opportunities for students to engage in activities that peak their curiosity, and motivates their learning.
It has become my personal goal, and that of my staff, to create a unique educational experience for your child; one which will be valuable and enduring over their lifetime. We welcome you to our community and hope that you and your child also find the experience rewarding.
